China Initiative A key feature of the University of Dayton’s international strategy is pursing partnerships and forming strong ties with top universities in China. Since 2003, UD administrators and faculty have worked to carry out this goal by creating opportunities for exchange and research collaboration for UD and Chinese students and faculty in the areas of engineering, engineering technology, law, computer science and business. Faculty/Researcher Exchange President's Travel Program to China (October 2009) Institutional Partnerships Nanjing University Nanjing University of Science and Technology (NUST) Nanjing Medical University (NMU) Nanjing Art Institute (NAI) Shanghai Normal University Zhejiang University Jiangsu Educational Program Corporate Partnerships Faculty/Researcher Exchange UD faculty may propose independent lectures or research at partner institutions during summer or sabbatical leave. The University of Dayton's partner institutions may also send its faculty to Dayton as visiting researchers for the purpose of developing common interests in collaborative research and, if possible, applying for research funds in both the U.S. and China. Recent activity includes:
A small group of University of Dayton alumni and friends will travel to China in October 2009 with University of Dayton president Dr. Daniel Curran to experience and learn about China's culture. The inaugural trip for the President's Travel Program will involve local experts and alumni who can provide knowledge and commentary for the group. The itinerary includes stops in Beijing, Xi'an, Nanjing, Shanghai and Hong Kong. Nanjing University (NJU) Founded in 1902, Nanjing is typically considered to be among the top five universities in China. NJU offers 74 undergraduate and over 300 graduate programs to over 35,000 students. CLACTA program As part of the CLACTA program, graduate students from Nanjing University to teach Mandarin in area high schools. While in Dayton, the students pursue a graduate certificate in the School of Education and Allied Professions at the University of Dayton. General student exchange UD and NJU have an exchange program that allows interested students from each institution to study at the host institution. NJU offers a limited number of courses in English for UD students to take a full course load, in addition to Chinese language and culture courses. Nanjing University of Science and Technology (NUST) UD School of Law and Nanjing University Science and Technology The University of Dayton School of Law hosts qualified students from select international partner schools for a one-semester program called U.S. Law and the Protection of Intellectual Property (USL-PIP). Students enroll in classes providing an introduction to the U.S. legal system and U.S. legal research as well as classes in U.S. law governing the recognition and protection of intellectual property. Students will benefit from the program as a stand-alone educational experience by gaining a local and global perspective on the U.S. legal system and views on intellectual property. Upon successful completion of the semester, the students have the option of continuing or returning at a later date to enroll, with advanced standing, in UDSL’s Master of Law (LLM) or Master of Science in Law (MSL) degree program. UD Master of Public Administration GPALP Program The Master of Public Administration provides an education program for senior-level undergraduate students from several target partner institutions in China. The Government Planning and Leadership Program (GPLP) is a one-semester full-time academic program. Participating international students enroll in three courses: Introduction to Public Administration (MPA 500); Geographic Information Systems for Public Administration (MPA 513); and Government Planning (MPA 514). Students complete a major project in the GIS for Public Administration course, and gain first-hand experience in the Government Planning course by attending governmental meetings and interacting with officials. In order to familiarize students with American Government, a one-week seminar will be provided to students in the program prior to the beginning of the fall term. Nanjing Medical University (NMU) Medical fields and health care This partnership benefits students in the bachelor and doctoral physical therapy programs as well as the local medical community by examining comparative approaches to treatment and health. The agreement, signed in November 2007, calls for collaboration in areas of research and teaching, including both student and faculty exchanges with NMU. Students in the University of Dayton's Doctor of Physical Therapy program will participate in a study abroad program to NMU in the summer of 2010. Nanjing Art Institute (NAI) Art Exchange Project UD’s Department of Visual Arts offered a Special Problems course in fall 2007 titled “Nanjing Exchange Project: The Natural and the Artificial”. Approximately 13 students from across UD’s Visual Communication Design and Fine Arts Studio degree programs enrolled. The students engaged in graphic design, printmaking, painting, drawing, and digital and traditional multi media works around the topic, The Natural and Artificial. Students dealt with issues ranging from personal environmental experiences to global experiences. UD students’ work was displayed in an exhibition in Nanjing in summer 2008. UD displayed Nanjing students’ work in February to March 2008. The faculty members who taught the class at UD were Professor John V. Clarke and Professor Erin Holscher Almazan. In the fall of 2009, Professor Yang from NAI will visit UD and guest lecture. Shanghai Normal University (SNU) Engineering Technology 3+1 Program According to an agreement signed in October 2003, students at SNU in China can apply for a joint degree program leading to a B.S.E.T. in either electronic technology or manufacturing technology from SHNU and the University of Dayton. Students take their first three years of classes at SHNU and transfer to UD for their final year of classes. Once on campus, students live among traditional undergraduate UD students in the International Learning and Living Community and other campus housing. Following UD graduation in May, the students return to SHNU to complete their final semester and graduate from SHNU. Summer Study Abroad Program In recent summers, University of Dayton students have studied in Shanghai as part of the Center for International Program’s summer study abroad program. The program is operated in collaboration with Shanghai Normal University. A group of students from the communication department traveled to Shanghai to study Intercultural Communication (specifically communication between Americans and Chinese); Communication in Organizations; and Television & Video Production. General student exchange (semester and full year) UD and SHNU have an exchange program that allows interested students from each institution to study at the host institution. Courses are offered in both English and Mandarin Chinese; students may study engineering or Chinese language. Zhejiang University Electro-Optics Program (Graduate program)
Master Degree Program In cooperation with Nanjing University, Jiangsu Province and the Jiangsu Provincial Department of Information Industry, the University of Dayton will provide a graduate degree program for personnel in the Jiangsu Provincial Department of Information Industry as well as graduates of selected partner institutions (Nanjing University, Nanjing University of Science and Technology, and Shanghai Normal University). The partnership is designed to meet the needs of the Jiangsu region, and to advance the technical and cultural cooperation between it and the Miami Valley region in Ohio. Corporate Partnerships with MBA and Engineering UD and several corporate partners have agreed to create a program to bring “rising star” Chinese employees and recent university graduates to Dayton for a two-year program. Once in Dayton the individuals will simultaneously pursue a master’s degree at UD while being trained and working with the corporate partner in the summer and during breaks. |
