China Initiative A key feature of the University of Dayton’s international strategy is pursing partnerships and forming strong ties with top universities in China. Since 2003, UD administrators and faculty have worked to carry out this goal by creating opportunities for exchange and research collaboration for UD and Chinese students and faculty in the areas of engineering, engineering technology, law, computer science and business. Nanjing University Nanjing University for Finance and Economics (NUFE) Nanjing Medical Univeristy (NMU) Nanjing Art Institute (NAI) Shanghai Normal University Macao University of Science and Technology China Jiliang University Zhejiang University Corporate Partnerships Nanjing University (NJU) Founded in 1902, Nanjing is typically considered to be among the top five universities in China. NJU offers 74 undergraduate and over 300 graduate programs to over 35,000 students. MBA-Corporate UD and NJU work with multinational corporations to identify top NJU students to study at UD with corporate sponsorship. Students in this program complete summer internships at the U.S.-based headquarters and then agree to work for the corporation in China upon graduation. CLACTA program As part of the CLACTA program, two graduate students from Nanjing University are currently in Dayton, Ohio to teach Mandarin in two area high schools and facilitate the distance learning-based Mandarin courses at UD. The students arrived in the summer of 2007 and will remain in Dayton until summer 2009. While in Dayton, the students pursue a graduate degree in the School of Education and Allied Professions at the University of Dayton and teach as part of a Graduate Assistantship. General student exchange UD and NJU have an exchange program that allows interested students from each institution to study at the host institution. UD students studying at Nanjing University must be proficient in the Mandarin Chinese language. General faculty/researcher exchange UD faculty may propose independent lectures or research at NJU during summer or sabbatical leave. In the future, NJU will work with UD to send its faculty to Dayton as visiting researchers for the purpose of developing common interests in collaborative research and, if possible, applying for research funds in both the U.S. and China. Recent activity includes:
NJU and UD will continue working on the NJU-UD Suzhou Education, Research and Entrepreneurship Development Center, which was established in November 2004 and located in China-Singapore Suzhou Industrial Park (SIP). The works of the Center will focus on developing educational programs for the companies in SIP and cooperative research. The two universities will discuss the possibility and details of establishing a formal R & D center in the near future. Nanjing University for Finance and Economics (NUFE) General faculty/researcher exchange Professor Fran Conte (Law) served as a guest lecturer at Nanjing University for Finance and Economics in summer 2007. R.I.S.E. symposium Students from NUFE participated in UD’s School of Business’ R.I.S.E. Symposium in March 2007. It is anticipated that NUFE students will participate in the March 2008 symposium. Nanjing Medical University (NMU) Medical fields and health care This partnership benefits students in the bachelor and doctoral physical therapy programs as well as the local medical community by examining comparative approaches to treatment and health. The agreement, signed in November 2007, calls for collaboration in areas of research and teaching, including both student and faculty exchanges with NMU. Nanjing Art Institute (NAI) Art Exchange Project UD’s Department of Visual Arts offered a Special Problems course in fall 2007 titled “Nanjing Exchange Project: The Natural and the Artificial”. Approximately 13 students from across UD’s Visual Communication Design and Fine Arts Studio degree programs enrolled. The students engaged in graphic design, printmaking, painting, drawing, and digital and traditional multi media works around the topic, The Natural and Artificial. Student dealt with issues ranging from personal environmental experiences to global experiences. UD students’ work will be displayed in an exhibition in Nanjing in summer 2008. UD will likely display Nanjing students’ work in February to March 2008. The faculty members teaching the class at UD include Professor John V. Clarke and Professor Erin Holscher Almazan. Shanghai Normal University (SNU) Engineering Technology 3+1 Program According to an agreement signed in October 2003, students at SNU in China can apply for a joint degree program leading to a B.S.E.T. in either electronic technology or manufacturing technology from SHNU and the University of Dayton. Students take their first three years of classes at SHNU and transfer to UD for their final year of classes. Once on campus, students live among traditional undergraduate UD students in the International Learning and Living Community and other campus housing. Following UD graduation in May, the students return to SHNU to complete their final semester and graduate from SHNU. The third cohort of 31 students arrived on campus in June 2008. Summer Study Abroad Program In recent summers, University of Dayton students have studied in Shanghai as part of the Center for International Program’s summer study abroad program. The program is operated in collaboration with Shanghai Normal University. Student documentaries from the summer 2006 program can be viewed at: mms://lsmedia.udayton.edu/studyabroad/chinaAlex.wmv mms://lsmedia.udayton.edu/studyabroad/china2.wmv mms://lsmedia.udayton.edu/studyabroad/chinaHarris.wmv The Department of Communication is operating a summer 2008 study abroad program (June 15-July 6, 2008), in collaboration with the Center for International Programs. The department will take a group of students to Shanghai to study Intercultural Communication (specifically communication between Americans and Chinese); Communication in Organizations; and Television & Video Production. General student exchange (semester and full year) UD and SHNU have an exchange program that allows interested students from each institution to study at the host institution. Courses are offered in both English and Mandarin Chinese; students may study engineering or Chinese language. Macao University of Science and Technology (MUST) Computer Science, M.C.S. program, Exchange As outlined in an agreement made between MUST and UD in June 2004, computer science students spend their first year of study at MUST taking ten courses required for MUST’s M.S. degree in information technology. Students transfer six semester credits to UD and take the remaining 30 credits required by UD on UD’s campus over the course of a summer term and two full semesters. Students graduate with a UD M.C.S. degree. China Jiliang University (CJLU) Electro-Optics and Materials Engineering (Masters’) Exchange Following an agreement signed March 2005, students spend a year of study at CJLU being taught by CJLU faculty. UD will accept the credits of those courses delivered by CJLU, and, in the remaining year and a half, students will complete their studies at UD. Eligible students completing the curriculum will receive a Master’s degree from UD. Other students who take the courses will be issued a certificate which proves that they have completed the courses of UD and a certificate which proves that they have completed the courses of CJLU. UD and several corporate partners have agreed to create a program to bring “rising star” Chinese employees and recent university graduates to Dayton for a two-year program. Once in Dayton the individuals will simultaneously pursue a master’s degree at UD while being trained and working with the corporate partner in the summer and during breaks. |
UD Delegation to China Dr. Joseph Saliba, Dean of the School of Engineering, and Amy Anderson, Director of the Center for International Programs, visited Nanjing and Shanghai to explore numerous opportunities for partnerships there. Faculty & staff may read the report online >> |
