Teachers

Our faculty in the Intensive English Program are highly qualified professional instructors. Our instructors have the following qualifications:

  • A Master's degree in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL) or a related field
  • Ability to speak at least one foreign language
  • Experience working, studying and/or living abroad
  • Membership in international and regional TESOL and other professional organizations
  • Knowledge in computer-assisted instruction

       Karin Avila-John, Academic Coordinator and Teacher
    Karin Avila-John is originally from Argentina, where she taught business and professional English communication courses to corporate executives and managers, professionals, and students. Ms. Avila-John received an M.A. in the Teaching of English as a Second Language from Southern Illinois University in Carbondale. Prior to joining the program in 1985, Ms. Avila-John was a full-time instructor for St. Mary-of-the-Woods College in Indiana.
    Ms. Avila-John has taught at all levels of the Intensive English Program and currently serves as Academic Coordinator. In addition, she has created and taught many special TESOL courses and seminars in areas such as Business Writing, Pronunciation and Oral Business Communication. She is the co-author of the internationally utilized ET+ Inventory of English Communication Skills.

    Leah Konicki, Teacher
    Leah Konicki has been teaching for IEP since August 2008. A native of Kettering, Ohio she has returned to the Dayton area after more than 30 years. Most recently, Ms. Konicki lived and taught English in Bratislava, the capital of Slovakia, for three years. She obtained her TESOL from Prague Schools in Prague, Czech Republic. In addition to her experience teaching English, Leah has taught architecture and historic preservation courses, and has worked in the private and public sectors administering historic preservation programs. She holds a Bachelors degree in Design from the University of Cincinnati and a Masters of Education in Human Resource development from Xavier University (Cincinnati).

    Sally McQuinn, Teacher
    Sally McQuinn is originally from Middletown, Ohio and a graduate of Miami University of Ohio. She started teaching in 1994, as a Peace Corps volunteer, serving in Micronesia. She then went on to work in the American public school system with ESL families, and after earning her M.A. in TESOL from Wheaton College in 2001, started teaching ESL at the university level. Sally spent several years working abroad in Vietnam, teaching Academic English, American Studies, and English for Specific Purposes courses. She has served her church community as an ESL Coordinator who helped settle several refugee families. Her areas of interest are Pronunciation and Intercultural Communication. She currently serves as the department's lead teacher for Speaking and Listening.

    She is married with one child, and enjoys travelling with her family when she has opportunity. She has visited over 40 countries and says one thing she likes best about her work is meeting friendly people from different cultures.

       Lilia Moyer, Teacher
    Lilia Moyer a native of Southern Brazil, joined the University of Dayton’s IEP program in the summer of 2008. She has a Bachelors of Arts Degree in Portuguese-English Translation from the Federal University in her state of Rio Grande do Sul. Lilia taught EFL in a private language school in Brazil. Her students ranged in age from middle school to professionals involved with International Businesses. Coming to the United States she received her MA-TESL Degree from Wright State University in 2007.
    While completing her Masters Degree at Wright State University she was selected by the “Voice of America” network to participate in a published oral interview about her challenges in learning and teaching “English as a Second Language”. Before joining U.D., she was an Adjunct instructor at Wright State University teaching Portuguese, English 101 for international students, and English as a Second Language.

    Susan Sandro, Teacher
    Susan Sandro joined the IEP faculty in the summer of 2006. A native of Denver, Colorado, but a long-time resident of Ohio, Ms. Sandro received her MA-TESL from Wright State University (WSU) in the spring of 2006. While at WSU, she was a teaching assistant with teaching responsibilities for both freshman composition and intensive English courses. She also taught as a volunteer in the Huber Heights English Program (HELP). In addition to her teaching experience, Susan has worked in the corporate world as a manager and executive with responsibility for environmental and safety issues. She holds a Bachelors degree in French from Beloit College (Wisconsin) and a Masters of Environmental Science from Miami University (Ohio).
