Our faculty in the Intensive English Program are highly
qualified professional instructors. Our instructors have the following
qualifications:
A Master's degree in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL)
or a related field
Ability to speak at least one foreign language
Experience working, studying and/or living abroad
Membership in international and regional TESOL and other professional
organizations
Knowledge in computer-assisted instruction

Karin Avila-John, Academic
Coordinator and Teacher Karin Avila-John is originally from
Argentina, where she taught business and professional English communication
courses to corporate executives and managers, professionals, and students. Ms.
Avila-John received an M.A. in the Teaching of English as a Second Language from
Southern Illinois University in Carbondale. Prior to joining the program in
1985, Ms. Avila-John was a full-time instructor for St. Mary-of-the-Woods
College in Indiana. | Ms.
Avila-John has taught at all levels of the Intensive English Program and
currently serves as Academic Coordinator. In addition, she has created and
taught many special TESOL courses and seminars in areas such as Business
Writing, Pronunciation and Oral Business Communication. She is the co-author of
the internationally utilized ET+ Inventory of English Communication
Skills.
Gail Jaraki,
Teacher Gail Jaraki joined the faculty in 1995. She has taught all
class levels of the Intensive English Program, community-based classes for
immigrants and computer classes for non-native speakers of English. Prior to
1995, Ms. Jaraki taught English in Japan and literacy classes in the central
Ohio area. She received a B.A. in Classical Languages and an M.A. in Educational
Theory and Practice: TESOL, both from The Ohio State
University. |
Laurie Leach, Teacher Laurie
Leach holds degrees from Bucknell University and Wright State University with
advanced degrees in TESOL. She has been an instructor since 1993. She has
developed and presented courses in all aspects of English communication for
goals ranging from basic English for refugees and other new Americans to
professional communication for business persons and intensive pre-academic
English for students planning to enter U.S. universities. Ms. Leach served as
Academic Coordinator for ten years, and oversaw TOEFL testing, curriculum
development and resource selection. |

Susan Sandro, Teacher
Susan Sandro joined the IEP faculty in the summer of 2006. A native of Denver, Colorado, but a long-time resident
of Ohio, Ms. Sandro received her MA-TESL from Wright State University (WSU) in the spring of 2006. While at WSU, she
was a teaching assistant with teaching responsibilities for both freshman composition and intensive English courses.
She also taught as a volunteer in the Huber Heights English Program (HELP). In addition to her teaching experience,
Susan has worked in the corporate world as a manager and executive with responsibility for environmental and
safety issues. She holds a Bachelors degree in French from Beloit College (Wisconsin) and a Masters of Environmental
Science from Miami University (Ohio).
