International Studies Program

The International Studies Program at UD is expanding its program to offer a new set of concentrations to students and allow for an innovative educational experience. The revised program becomes even more focused while offering a broader look at the issues.

“These concentrations take students into areas outside of the typical international studies programs,” says Dr. David Darrow, director for the International Studies Program. “At UD, we offer a more issues-focused approach to international studies.”

International Studies is a multi-disciplinary major with core courses in anthropology, economics, history, philosophy, political science, research methods, religious studies, and foreign language study. The curriculum is designed to prepare students to be leaders in addressing global challenges by providing them with multiple disciplinary means of comprehending complex global issues. In addition to core course, students, students have the freedom to follow specific regional and topical interests by completing one of several new concentrations.

The new set of concentrations includes:
  • Africa in World Affairs(completion leads to an Africana Studies minor)
  • Certificate in International Business: select either an Economics/Finance or Marketing/Human Resources emphasis
  • Cooperation and Change in the New Europe
  • Global Economic Development
  • Global Environmental Sustainability
  • International Journalism
  • Marianist Social Transformation (a faith-based approach to world issues that leads to a minor by the same name)
  • Migration: immigration issues within the U.S.
  • Peace and Global Security
  • Women's and Gender Issues in a Global Context (leads to a minor in Women’s and Gender Studies)
The human rights component now stands alone as a separate major at the University of Dayton, replacing the concentration within the International Studies Program. Learn more at http://www.udayton.edu/News/Article/?contentId=7509.

The revised curriculum was in response to changes within the International Studies and Human Rights programs, and recent international events. Dr. Darrow, together with input from students and faculty from throughout the university, revised the curriculum to prepare students for global citizenship and leadership. The updated curriculum has been especially formatted for students seeking the broadly based international perspective required for successful careers in education, government, international business, law, national security, humanitarian relief, and social entrepreneurship.

The diversity of the nine concentrations continues the UD tradition of defining international studies as something beyond the narrow exploration of international relations by introducing relevant concentrations designed for students with a variety of interests.

International Studies majors must include an international and/or cross-cultural experiential component in their program prior to graduation. This requirement can be satisfied through participation in an international study abroad program, internship, or cultural immersion. Students may also satisfy this requirement by taking part in a service or work internship with an international organization located within the United States.
