Technology Abroad

Many programs will require you to bring your computer with you when you travel abroad. Or perhaps you like the convenience of your notebook computer for downloading pictures and sending e-mails.

Regardless of why you take your computer, the most important thing to remember is you have an increased risk of theft by taking your computer out of the country. Keep a close watch on your computer at all times.

Your UD e-mail account
To access your Lotus Notes account while abroad, log-in to http://notes.udayton.edu and use your Novell username and password to access your e-mail.

In the interest of your security, some e-mails may be blocked. To view these e-mails or designate certain e-mail addresses as "safe", go to http://spam.udayton.edu

Taking your computer overseas
Before you leave, take a few minutes to prepare your computer.
  1. Run a virus scan. Double-click the yellow shield icon in the bottom right-hand corner of your screen. Select "Scan Computer."

  2. Install/Run AdAware and SpyBot to remove Spyware. Directions are available at http://training.udayton.edu. (Look for the "Exterminate Spyware" link.)

  3. Remove Cookies and Temporary Internet Files. Open Internet Explorer, select "Tools", then "Internet Options", and then "Delete Cookies" and "Delete Files".

  4. Install Windows updates. Visit http://www.microsoft.com and select "Microsoft Update".

  5. Run Disk Cleanup and Disk Defragmenter. Click the "Start" button, go to "All Programs", then "Accessories", then "System Tools." From here, select "Disk Defragmenter" and then select "Defragment" or "Disk Cleanup".

  6. Run Error Checking. Double-click the My Computer icon, right-click "Local Disk (C:)" and select "Properties". Go to the Tools tab and under Error Checking select "Check Now". Choose "Automatically fix file system errors" and select "Start".
Other considerations: Before leaving, purchase the necessary electrical transformers and adapters needed for your computer. Contact your computer manufacturer or UD's Computer Store for details. Or visit a store such as Circuit City, Best Buy or Radio Shack. Keep in mind that many energy conversion devices found at stores can only handle less powerful items such as blowdryers.

Some students suggest bringing a receipt or other documentation for your laptop for customs purposes.
