CIP Summer 2010 Programs Sorrento, Italy Comparative Law May 10-29, 2010 This program is for students in the School of Law as well as adult learners. Highlights Located in Southern Italy on the Bay of Naples, Sorrento sits atop 150-foot cliffs overlooking the azure Mediterranean Sea. It is just north of the spectacular Amalfi Coast and its villages of Positano, Amalfi and Alerno. A city with a long history, it started out as a Greek village prior to the rise of the Roman Empire. Wealthy Romans went to Sorrento to escape the dust and heat of ancient Rome. Many other civilizations, including Etruscans, the Byzantine and the Normans, are part of Sorrento’s history. Today, Sorrento is a modern city with a vibrant cultural life and is home to museums, arts festivals and theater. Although Sorrento offers the amenities of a city, it is still small enough that a pedestrian can easily walk from end to end in a half hour. In fact, one of Sorrento’s most endearing qualities is its narrow, winding, pedestrian friendly streets, filled with shops and restaurants. Ancient sites such as Pompeii, Mount Vesuvius, Naples and the beautiful isles of Capri and Ischia are a short distance away, and easily accessible by public transportation. In approximately two hours by train, one can be in the heart of Rome tossing coins in the Trevi Fountain or visiting St. Peter’s Basilica in Vatican City. Academic program LAW 771-ZA Comparative Law: A Comparison of European and U.S. Criminal Justice Systems (3 credits) This course includes an examination of the European criminal justice systems with emphasis on the British, French and Italian systems of justice. A major goal of the course is to discover the general principles of law that are common to both U.S. and European systems while also examining some of the fundamental differences between the various systems of justice. Students will meet with English barristers, Italian lawyers and Italian judges. Students will observe actual Italian court proceedings accompanied by a translator. They will also learn about the law of ancient Rome in connection with a tour of Pompeii. Adult learners A concurrent program will be offered for adult learners. The dates for the adult learners program are tentatively scheduled for May 10-22, 2010. Adult learners interested in participating in this program should contact the Education Abroad office for more information and to apply. |
