CIP Summer 2010 Programs

Leipzig, Germany — Faith, Culture & Human Rights in Germany
May 14-June 22, 2010

Highlights
Leipzig with its rich musical heritage is a unique location for an integrated examination of human rights, faith, and culture. This program culminates with the annual International Bach Festival. Leipzig is located in the State of Saxony, one of six German provinces comprising the territory of the former Germany Democratic Republic, known in the U.S. as “East Germany.” The city of 500,000 and its surrounding areas have a rich heritage in Christian faith as represented in Reformation history and culture, including a long tradition of collaboration between music and the church. The program will focus on the intersection of and interplay among faith issues, cultural understanding and expressions, and human rights in the Reformation, the Enlightenment, and in the mid-and late 20th and early 21st centuries with a focus on the states of the former German Democratic Republic. Students will examine aspects of the complex social patterns of life in contemporary eastern Germany that arose as a legacy of National Socialism, Communism and the traumatic introduction of capitalism in the East, and the unification of the two former German states.
