Students from other majors may participate by permission. Application: Contact Dr. Margie Pinnell for application details. The application process includes an application form and an interview which occurs in October 2009. Those interested in the ETHOS program should apply for the program early in the fall 2009 semester, prior to registering for spring 2010 classes. Contact: Dr. Margie Pinnell at 937-229-3464 Latin America // Africa // India // Bangladesh ETHOS offers various service opportunities in cities within Latin America, Africa, India and Bangladesh, as well as domestic placements. ETHOS International Service Learning Placements are part of EGR 330, Engineering Design and Appropriate Technology (3 credits). The course spans both the spring and summer terms and includes preparatory sessions and an international technical service-learning placement. The spring term’s preparatory sessions include an introduction to appropriate technology, language preparation and a cultural immersion course. During the summer term, students participate in an 8- to 16-week technical service-learning internship. These internships involve working with NGOs or cottage industries doing research and/or engineering-related work. Students are sent in groups of two or three to live with host families. Upon return, students are required to submit both a technical report and reflection report and give two presentations. Students are expected to raise approximately $1,000 through participation in group fundraisers and by seeking donations from families, friends, their communities or their churches. The program is subsidized by the School of Engineering. Sites for each year are determined by the availability of projects. |
