Program sites El Paso, TX/Juarez, Mexico A group of seven students and one leader will travel to the U.S./Mexican Border and immerse themselves in the history and culture of the border with the help of the Women’s Intercultural Center. According to the Center, the experience is “educational, experimental, experiential, analytical and reflective. You are invited to share with us a tour of this meeting place of the first and third world. We will explore what it means in this situation to make a ‘preferential option for the poor.’ From the border context we will examine the concepts of free trade and sustainable development.” El Salvador Encounter A group of eleven students and one leader will travel to San Salvador, El Salvador through CRISPAZ (Christians for Peace in El Salvador). The experience will include opportunities to meet Salvadorans, hear their stories, and accompany them for a short time in their daily lives. This experience is full of educational, experiential, and spiritual opportunities for growth. Truly an educational immersion experience, as participants have a chance to see first-hand sights of triumph and trial in El Salvador’s economic, spiritual, and political history and present. Riobamba, Ecuador Ten students and two leaders will travel to Ecuador through Experience in Learning Ecuador. They will learn about the local history, culture, climate and topography. Participants will stay with host families. Students will travel to the Cacha Indian Community to do some volunteer work. This trip will include day trips to a local mountain, waterfalls, and natural springs hot baths. Knowledge of the Spanish language is helpful, but translation will be available. Tijuana, Mexico Eleven students and one leader will travel to Tijuana, Mexico, to work with the poor through the Tijuana Christian Mission. TCM began over 35 years ago when Martha Lopez started taking children into her home who had no food, little clothes, and no education. She fed them hot meals, found them shirts and pants, and enrolled them in the local school. As time passed, more and more children began living with Martha and her family. Today, over 80 children live at the Tijuana Christian Mission. The group from UD will spend the week with Martha, her staff, and the children, and do work which they couldn’t afford to do on their own. In past years, groups have built jungle gyms, roofed dormitories, built office space, laid ceramic tile, and led sports camps for the children. Camp Stevens, Julian, CA The Mission of Camp Stevens is to help individuals of all ages deepen their sense of reverence and respect for themselves, and their fellow human beings, the creation, and God. It also seeks to be a peaceful ‘place apart’ for nurturing, planning, reflection, exchange of ideas, and sharing in Christian community. In its beautiful, unspoiled setting, Camp Stevens serves as a point of contact between human beings and the natural world. It seeks to serve as a model of ecological responsibility and to help individuals and groups reclaim an active stewardship of God’s creation. UD students will focus on helping the camp maintain its mission through general upkeep, organic gardening and composting, as well as team building, community living and learning activities. |
