Parents

An experience abroad can be an incredibly powerful, eye-opening time in the life of a university student. Immersion in a foreign culture for an extended period of time forces us to challenge our own beliefs and to look at the world - and ourselves - through new eyes. If we’re fortunate, the experience will have some unbelievably wonderful, once-in-a-lifetime memories. Yet, the experience may also include homesickness, lost luggage, or an unpleasant run-in with a pickpocket in Piccadilly Circus.

As a parent you can help your student make the most of his or her program. Here are a few suggestions to keep in mind:

Set realistic expectations — Both you and your son or daughter have probably been looking forward to this trip for some time. When you are anticipating something this much, the chance of a tremendous let-down in the face of the smallest obstacle is quite real. Don’t expect every moment to be picture perfect and you’ll save a lot of heartache.

Prepare for the unexpected — Review suggestions for personal safety abroad and discuss what to do in the event of lost luggage, a robbery, illness, etc. The program site coordinator will gladly assist with emergencies on “home base,” but most students travel throughout the program. Be sure your son or daughter knows how to get help in an emergency.

Expect the unusual — Every aspect of life - food, housing, weather, friends, the language - will probably differ from expectations. Encourage those differences as new and exciting experiences, rather than as hurdles or frustrations.

Encourage independence — Learning how to solve problems independently is a skill which is valued throughout life. From the earliest stages of planning the trip, encourage the student to assume responsibility. When problems come up, ask what steps the student has taken to resolve them before stepping in.

Provide support — Even if you’ve tried all of the above, there are times when a sympathetic ear is what is needed most. Cherish the moments to share the highs and lows of this incredible experience.
